Points of interest

Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Anticosti Island has an area of more than 7953 km². By way of comparison, the island of Montreal has an area of 472.6 km² and the island of Orléans, an area of 192.8 km². Accessible by plane or boat, it is recognized for its geological and fossiliferous heritage. Moreover, Anticosti Island is in the running to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also, the island is known for its very large population of deers, which makes it a paradise for hunters. It is estimated that there are more than 20 animals per square kilometer. In the village of Port-Menier, some 203 humans and hundreds of deers live side by side on a daily basis.

Baie-de-la-Tour

Feel away from home

Located on the north shore of the island, more than 200km from Port-Menier, Baie-de-la-Tour is absolutely worth the trip! Two majestic limestone cliffs surround the bay. If you listen closely, you can hear the pebbles on the beach “sing”. when the waves recede. During the summer, you can swim in the bay. The place is magnificent for walking on the beach or simply enjoy a meal, observing the turquoise color of the water. It feels very far from home, in Normandy perhaps!

Vaureal Falls

For adventurers or even strollers

At a height of nearly 80 meters, the Vauréal waterfall can be observed from a promontory overlooking it. This promontory is accessible from the road, by foot, after crossing about 100 meters. The path is landscaped and has a very slight drop. It is an easy stop for visitors who have little time (but who has little time on the island?) or those who have difficulty getting around. For more adventurous visitors, it is possible to access the waterfall from its canyon. The hike of more than 7 km allows you to find yourself at the base of the waterfall. Why not take the opportunity to swim in the pool?

The village of Port-Menier

Where it’s easier to count humans than deers!

Throughout history, a few villages have been established on the Island, but today only the village of Port-Menier remains. It is in this village that the Anticostians live, where we find the school, the museum and the church, the dispensary and the putt-putt, the accommodation, similar to a general store and the coop, the village grocery store. It is from Port-Menier that you take the plane or the boat, and where you can find accommodation, whether at the inn or at the campsite, or even at a friend's house, but not everyone has this chance ! There's nothing like watching the time go by on du Cap-Blanc street, deers coming to see you, whether you have a piece of food or not!
